Dr. Weeks introduces himself, describes Balloon Sinuplasty™ and discusses how it differs from traditional sinus surgery.

Dr. Weeks:
Hello, I am Dr. Brian Weeks, and I am the Director of Minimally Invasive Head and Neck Surgery at Senta Clinic at Alvarado Hospital, and my field of expertise is ear, nose and throat diseases, and I specialize specifically in head and neck surgical procedures and minimally invasive treatments of disorders of the head and neck.

Balloon Sinuplasty™ is essentially angioplasty for your nose. It is a new, innovative way to address diseases of the sinuses using a minimally invasive approach that doesn’t damage or alter the natural tissues.

As we move along in medicine, we understand the importance of maintaining the structure of the body and basically causing as little damage or disruption of those structures as possible. And what we have been able to do with this balloon technology is, we have been able to use a balloon that we inflate to a certain pressure, and instead of removing or cutting out tissue, we are repositioning or remodeling tissue, and we are doing so to allow the sinuses to be remodeled in an open state.

The main difference between traditional sinus surgery and Balloon Sinuplasty™ is really the entire approach to the procedure. We are taking a traditional surgery and we are utilizing new tools that basically preserve the tissue. And what that does is it allows for quicker operative times, more effective operations and more importantly, much quicker recovery, much less bleeding, much less pain and much less of the associated negative things that people kind of correlate with sinus surgery such as nasal packing, excessive bleeding, bruising and things like that. It has really revolutionized our ability to treat sinus disease in a minimally invasive fashion.
