Physician assistant Mary Ann recalls which STDs (sexually transmitted diseases) can affect fertility.
Mary Ann:
Well, a number of ways. The biggest one I think would be chlamydia because it can cause the scarring to the fallopian tubes, to the ovaries, which have to be able to be functioning properly in order for the patient to be able to conceive and get pregnant.
Other STDs that could interfere, obviously HIV is something that, you know, you should be tested for when you are pregnant to make sure that you are not passing that on to your child. Herpes is another issue, especially with pregnancy. We want to ensure that there’s no current outbreak of herpes, genital . . . outbreak during the delivery to again, protect the baby.
