Dr. Parish discusses the hormonal rings available to women.

Dr. Parish:
There’s basically three types of rings. One is something called Estring, which is used to provide a ring delivery system locally to the vagina and it’s released continuously. So it’s put in and changed periodically.

Femring is a different delivery system that provides systemic high dose estrogen and would be similar to giving oral or transdermal therapy for systemic treatment like for hot flashes, etc.

So those are the two types, and there’s also something called Nuvaring, which is a contraceptive method which delivers very high doses of basically hormones to younger patients who are seeking contraception and basically turns off the natural ovulation cycle by high dose suppressive hormone doses.
