Dr. Alinsod discusses hymenoplasty.

Dr. Alinsod:
Hymenoplasty is a surgical procedure where we re-approximate a broken hymen so that it appears that the hymen is virginal again or brought back together. Now you may not realize it, but there are many cultures that require the newlywed couple on their wedding night to show that during intercourse that the bride bleeds, and for family honor, if the bride doesn’t bleed, sometimes the life of the woman is endangered.

So many women come to me, mostly from Middle Eastern families and some from Oriental families and also Hispanic families, they come and request that their hymen be repaired. So it’s a 30- to 60-minute procedure where we are able to approximate the hymenal remnants and with fine sutures put them back together.

It’s a seasonal thing. I get more of these requests in the spring before summer comes. A lot of people get married in the summer, and so my patients come in the spring. I do their surgeries by the summer. They are ready to go to let’s say Syria or Lebanon and meet their arranged husband to be, get married, and hopefully they bleed during their wedding night.
