Dr. Parish describes androgen insufficiency syndrome.

Dr. Parish:
Androgen insufficiency syndrome is a condition where there is certain criteria that need to be met. One is the patient needs to have symptoms. So typically this is fatigue, decreased libido, low energy and a change from her prior status in terms of her libido or sexual desire.

Also she needs to have an explanation either an oophorectomy or menopause or some change in her adrenal status to be etiologically responsible for the condition.

And thirdly there has to be laboratory parameters of low androgen and based on a consensus conference a number of years ago, the Princeton Consensus Conference, that was the definition, you have to have those three arms of the condition.

The problem with this is that the data hasn’t really shown that T-levels, testosterone levels or androgen levels necessarily correlate with clinical symptoms, either before a treatment or after a treatment intervention and there’s been a lot of struggle around the role of testosterone levels in defining this syndrome.
