For the last several weeks I have been working on a special project cooked up by a few friends in my community. I have been casually mentioning my project in conversation and several people suggested that I share it with all of you because it is such a fun and a great learning experience. Let me tell you about project YUM.

One of my friends needed help preparing meals for herself and her family for a month while she is juggling projects at work and concentrating on self- care too. My friend, Rebecca, who is an author and chef in California called me and asked me if I would be willing to pitch in. Of course, I was delighted to help. She asked me to cook because she knew I would make meals that were plant-based, whole foods and taste great, like the ones in my book, Daelicious! Recipes for Vibrant Living. Vibrant living is what we wanted to create in our friend's life! I find cooking to be a creative process and it is a wonderful be able to swap cooking ideas with a chef. I contacted my friend here in D.C. and gave her the news that I would be her personal chef for the next 30 days and she was thrilled. I have to admit my first reaction was to be overwhelmed and thrilled as well. It was so touching to me that our dear friend Rebecca saw that our friend had a need and organized a plan to support her friend from 3,000 miles away. I personally feel honored to have friends that truly support one another when big life changing events happen but who also support one another when there is a little bump in the road too. I thought if we can help during the little bumps in the road it helps the big bumps not seem so big. I was tempted to tell Rebecca about my grandmother’s failing health and to say I would not be able to commit to this project. I decided to make time in my schedule to help with project YUM because I thought doing something that I love to help a friend in need could be one of the best ways for me to help cope with my own grieving process. Not that my grandmother has passed away, but it is clear at 98 years of age and in failing health that she is transitioning out of this life and into her homecoming with her God. So my grief process has begun. Project YUM allowed me to spend time with a dear friend a few times a week as I dropped off glass Pyrex containers filled with whole food goodness. In the next article I will talk about the meals themselves and what I learned by cooking meals from Rebecca, my friend the chef.
