Fitness expert Jackie Warner shares her grandmother's battle with psoriasis and provides fitness and well-being tips for women suffering from this skin condition.
Todd Hartley:
Did you know people living with psoriasis face the risk of developing other health conditions like heart disease and obesity? Hi, this is Todd Hartley for EmpowHER and let’s talk about why; why it’s important for psoriasis patients to manage their risk factors. Joining me right now is Bravo Television fitness expert and trainer Jackie Warner. Hi Jackie!
Jackie Warner:
Hi, thank you for having me.
Todd Hartley:
Jackie, it’s a treat. Listen, I got to tell you, my wife is a fitness professional. We love your show “Work Out” and I understand your grandmother had psoriasis. How did it affect her life?
Jackie Warner:
It affected her pretty greatly. She had such a bubbly personality and was so outgoing and when she would get her flare-ups, which were rather frequent, she wouldn’t leave the house. So it really did change her personality and she had a lot of shame attached to it. So at the time I didn’t understand what was going on; now I clearly do and understand what people go through emotionally with this condition.
Todd Hartley:
You know, I think it’s interesting, as a fitness professional you deal with a lot of the emotions that go along with exercise and…
Jackie Warner:
I sure do.
Todd Hartley:
Right? And there’s emotions that keep people bound from exercise and then once they get started, there’s the emotions of how great exercise makes you feel. How does exercise help a psoriasis patient?
Jackie Warner:
Well it is an autoimmune disorder so exercise is going to greatly help anybody that is suffering with an autoimmune disorder because it definitely increases your strength, it increases your health, your red blood count, your white blood count, so your immunity gets better, so it’s like taking a mega-mega vitamin on a daily basis. So exercise is key for anybody who has an autoimmune disorder.
Todd Hartley:
Now Jackie, I understand that you’ve helped develop an exercise program for psoriasis sufferers. Tell us about that.
Jackie Warner:
Yes, I did. It is called Fit In Your Skin™ and it is a full comprehensive wellness program that I helped develop and what you can do is, you can go to FitInYourSkin.com and there you can receive a free DVD, and on that DVD I have created a workout program for psoriasis sufferers.
So there are modifications in that program, for instance for people who may be cannot bend very well at the joints or have pain in the hands, but it’s still very intensive program, it’s a half-an-hour program, as well as I did pull things from my book. I pulled nutritional advice from my book; I pulled some diet tips; I pulled, you know, several things to help with the diet in my book.
Todd Hartley:
Jackie, I find it really interesting, you know, exercise can help us in so many different ways. Somebody who goes up, let’s kind of walk through the experience, if there’s a psoriasis sufferer that’s out there and they are looking to get help, this Fit In Your Skin™ program, which you can find out about it at FitInYourSkin.com that was created to inspire psoriasis patients to see and feel, you know, to their way to a healthier life, talk to me about the sign up and the DVD and really how that whole process operates?
Jackie Warner:
Well basically, go to the website and fill out some basic questions in order to receive a DVD. It’s very, very simple and as a matter of fact, as I have been talking about this, anybody can sign up and receive the free information. So it’s just very helpful DVD that it really goes over, you know, things that everybody should be abiding by. But if you want a free workout then you definitely need to go to the website and sign up for it, but for psoriasis sufferers, you know, there is like I said, a lot of shame attached and many people don’t want to go to the gym or be in a public arena. So a at-home DVD just to get them started and get them moving and active is very important.
Todd Hartley:
You know I recently interviewed CariDee English for EmpowHER, a psoriasis sufferer and also a model, and she shared a lot of photos with us, a lot of personal photos about how it affects her skin and ultimately affects her career and her outlook on life. A moment ago you mentioned modifications to the exercise routines that you have helped to develop. Why are modifications important?
Jackie Warner:
Because there is joint immobility with a lot of psoriasis sufferers, they get the plaques of skin around their joints and so it’s difficult and painful for them to bend in ways so exercises where you have to bend at the joints can be difficult. So you have to have some modifiers in order to address that so they can continue to work out.
Todd Hartley:
Yeah, I do this work here at EmpowHER in honor of my grandparents and it’s very inspiring for me. It seems like your work that you’re doing on behalf of psoriasis patients and FitInYourSkin.com helps inspire your grandmother’s memories. Is that accurate?
Jackie Warner:
Very much so, you know, this issue is near and dear to me because like I said, she suffered so greatly with it and it changed her lifestyle completely because back in that time there were no cures. There was topical ointment that didn’t really work and so it affected me. It affected me because of the strong personality change, watching a vibrant, outgoing woman become shy and saddened was very difficult for the entire family. So yeah, that is definitely a strong reason why I got involved in this and anytime that I could talk about health and wellness in regards to autoimmune disorders, in regards to really changing your disease by changing your diet is very, very important to me. I always get on the board with programs like that.
Todd Hartley:
You know, I have seen portions of the DVD and I got to tell you that that studio and the exercise routines look awesome. It just looks like its total top notch. You guys did a great job with it and I am sure it’s going to be helping people all over the country. It’s wonderful.
For more information, Fit In Your Skin™ has created this psoriasis program for patients to help inspire them to live a healthier lifestyle. You can go to FitInYourSkin.com. She is Jackie Warner. You know her from Bravo TV, from a great show called “Work Out” which we love and Jackie, is there anything we could be expecting this season on “Work Out” that you might want to tease to me right now?
Jackie Warner:
Well, I am actually in production for my new show on Bravo and it’s called “Thintervention” and…
Todd Hartley:
I read about it last night and we looked at each other, my wife and I were like, “That’s a cool name for show.”
Jackie Warner:
Yeah, yeah and it’s a cool show. Let me tell you I have enjoyed so much shooting this show and I’m going to really surprised people; it’s different than any other weight loss, life-change show out there. So I am very proud of the work there. So you can expect that from me and of course, everybody can go buy my book. I have got every secret, every tip that I have ever learned in my entire career is in my book and this is called “This Is Why You’re Fat (And How to Get Thin Forever)” and it really, really breaks down all the barriers between you and being healthy.
Todd Hartley:
That’s great. Jackie Warner, thank you so much for helping us advocate for women.
Jackie Warner:
