Dr. Matsunaga is the Chairman of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at St. John’s Health Center and has been an Assistant Clinical Professor at UCLA. Listed in the Consumers’ Checkbook Guide to Top Doctors, he has the distinction of being named among the specialists in the country to whom other doctors would send their family members. He also has been consistently named as a Super Doctor in Los Angeles magazine.
Dr. Matsunaga is a native of Los Angeles. He is board certified by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology. He completed his undergraduate degree from the University of California, Santa Cruz. He went on to receive his medical degree from the UCLA School of Medicine and did his residency at the Harbor-UCLA Medical Center.
He is an expert in general and high risk obstetrics and oversees the Perinatal Committee at St. John’s Health Center.
His special interest and expertise is in innovative and technically complex gynecologic surgery. He performed the first tension free vaginal tape (TVT) procedure in Santa Monica in 1999. This procedure has now become the standard of care for the treatment of female stress incontinence. He also has expertise in the laparoscopic approach to hysterectomy, supracervical hysterectomy and myomectomy.
