Dr. Pohl shares if support groups are helpful for people who are working to gain control of their prescription drug abuse.

Dr. Pohl:
Support groups are absolutely essential. One of the problems with chronic pain is we become very isolated. So, one of the solutions is to end the isolation and particularly, get involved with other people who have chronic pain. There are some problems with that. There are not readily available support groups for people with chronic pain.

We have, through our center, a pain and recovery support group. We have some outlines for people and we could, you could access that through our website. Narcotics Anonymous, for people who identify as having addiction, can often be supportive for people who have pain problems as well. They deal mostly with the prescription side of it and not with the pain side of it.

Fibromyalgia is an illness that many women suffer from and they have support groups and they can be accessed on the Web, but candidly there’s not enough support groups. So, you probably need to go start one in your community to get some support for you and to help other people who have the same problem.
