Ellen Schneiderman, R.N., introduces herself recalls the changes a woman's body will go through during the first trimester.

Nurse Schneiderman:
Hi, my name is Ellen Schneiderman and I have been a maternal child nurse for about 25 years now, and here at Banner Desert we see women from Phoenix and the East Valley from Mesa, Phoenix and Scottsdale area.

In the first trimester a woman should be feeling very subtle things. She is going to feel tired. She is going to notice that perhaps she may have some nausea and vomiting. She is going to see her breasts starting to be a little bit tender. She may notice some mood swings. She is going to feel a little bit tired. She may have some increased urination at times and she may have some vaginal spotting at times, which could be normal. If she has some vaginal bleeding however, it’s very important for her to call her doctor right away because that could be a sign that she is having a miscarriage.

During the first trimester is the most important time for the development of her fetus. All the organs are formed during the first trimester and so it’s very important that she maintain a healthy diet, not take any kind of medications without checking with her doctor first because all the organs that the baby will have are formed in the first trimester.

Other things a woman could notice is just a small weight gain in the first trimester, but a good thing for a woman to start doing is to maintain the normal exercise routine that she had prior to getting pregnant because this could keep her weight down as her pregnancy progresses and it can also give her a good sense of well-being because she is going to have some mood swings on and off during her pregnancy, and just to keep her exercise routine going is something that she should start now and continue up until the baby comes and even then after.

It’s very important to remember that during your pregnancy you should consume no alcohol at all. There is no safe level of any alcohol during your pregnancy. If you are a smoker this is the best time to stop because it can decrease the weight of your baby as your baby is developing.
