Dr. Garrett Lam recalls his inspiration for working in obstetrics and fetal therapy. Dr. Lam is a maternal-fetal medicine specialist at Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona.

Dr. Lam:
I’ll give you a story about what got me into obstetrics and this actually came back from my days in medical school, and in third year of medical school you look at all the different subspecialties and you start to decide which ones you like.

When I was doing my obstetrics rotation I was going to school upstate New York and literally it was, I was on call in the middle of a snowstorm and there was one particular mother that I followed all the way throughout her labor and I was with her during her labor process and she labored throughout the night and it was howling wind, cold outside.

That morning she actually delivered and I was there to do her delivery and no joke, when the baby delivered and I had it in my hands, literally a ray like came through the clouds and literally shone up the baby and that really sent chills to my spine. I don’t know why I’m emotional, But that really got me involved in finding obstetrics that was my calling.

Then when I came here for residency I realized that the field of obstetrics and gynecology was very broad and so for me I wanted to be able to have developed an expertise within a certain area and the maternal-fetal medicine is very challenging because it’s basically internal medicine and surgery mixed together to care for two patients – both mother and fetus, and the challenge is to give as best a result as you can for a mother who is in trouble or a baby who is in trouble and I think that’s what motivates me and if I can speak for rest of my partners, that’s what motivates us to do what we do.
