Dr. Darney describes midwifery.

Dr. Darney:
Midwifery means that obstetrical, that prenatal care and the delivery, the prenatal care and the delivery are conducted by trained midwives who practice a non-interventionist approach to obstetrics. That is, they take care of normal labor and delivery, and usually provide prenatal screening before so that if complexities develop, they can refer the patient to an obstetrician and provide postpartum care contraception, for example.

Dr. Philip Darney, M.D., M.Sc., is a Professor of Obstetrics, Gynecology and Reproductive Sciences at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) and Chief of Obstetrics and Gynecology at San Francisco General Hospital. He received his undergraduate degree in experimental psychology at the University of California, Berkeley, his medical degree at UCSF, and his Master of Science at The London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine.
