Dr. Garrett Lam explains how fetal conditions are diagnosed. Dr. Lam is an experienced OB/GYN at Banner Good Samaritan Medical Center in Phoenix, Arizona.

Dr. Lam:
Hi, my name is Dr. Garrett Lam. I practice at Banner Good Samaritan Hospital. I am a maternal-fetal medicine specialist and so we take care of high-risk pregnancies. My fields especially are fetal therapy and preeclampsia.

Well fetal conditions are usually found initially through ultrasound, and part of most every woman’s care is actually an ultrasound that’s usually done at about 18 to 20 weeks. Usually it’s done at the office of an obstetrician, sometimes it’s done at the office of a radiologist, and sometimes it’s done at a specialist’s office like ourselves.

We primarily see women who are older or have a history of babies with, for example, issues such as previous fetal defects, or mothers that have medical problems that may lead to fetal defects. And so, people are referred to us specifically for a special high-level ultrasound called a level-2 ultrasound and at that time we look at the fetal anatomy and try to look for any structural issues.
