In this edition of EmpowHER's "HER Daily Dose", Bailey Mosier examines a study that suggests that the symptoms of Premenstrual Dysphoric Disorder (PMDD) may last longer than originally thought which may have an impact on research in the future.

Hi, I’m Bailey Mosier. This is your EmpowHER HER Daily Dose.

It was previously believed that women with premenstrual dysphoric disorder would see their symptoms subside the day menstruation begins. We’re now learning they can last up to seven days.

Researchers at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago surveyed more than 1,000 women and found that the symptoms of PMDD – which may include extreme mood changes, anxiety, depression, anger and irritability – start about four days before menstruation and can linger three days into it.

This revision of how premenstrual dysphoric disorder is defined will have an impact on research studies down the line and ultimately treatment of the condition, which is specifically significant because extreme cases interfere with women’s ability to function at work or at home.

That wraps up your EmpowHER HER Daily Dose. Join me here at EmpowHER.com every weekday for your next dose of women’s health.

PMS and PMDD don't always behave the way medical textbooks say they should. Some women's premenstrual symptoms last beyond the onset of their period, as this study shows. But we've met women who got their PMS only at the time of ovulation; women whose symptoms last almost all month long; and other variations that would make most medical doctors conclude that it is not PMDD or PMS. We hope the current study results in more doctors listening more closely to what women are actually saying and experiencing, rather than always assuming the medical textbooks are infallible.
