Dr. Gong explains the causes of pink eye and discusses treatments.

Dr. Gong:
What causes pink eye is either allergic response to things in the air. It could be bacterial. And it could be viral.

They typical treatment for pink eye, if its allergic there are allergy-drops we can give but allergy-drops will dry out your eyes so we give also samples of some lubricating drops that you can buy over-the-counter.

If it is bacterial then we can give an antibiotic drop to take care of that and also if it’s viral we give them lubricating drops.

We do tell our patients not to share towels. Change your towels out every day. Make sure you always wash your hands before you touch your eye if you are wearing contacts. Otherwise we prefer you not touch your eye.

Continue use the lubricating drops and any other treatment that’s prescribed by your doctor.

Sometimes we even give warm compresses if the lids are still crusting shut. That will loosen up the debris so that you can clean that off with baby shampoo or any kind of antibacterial soap.
