Dr. Cannada introduces herself and discusses if a woman who has had a pelvic fracture can have children.

Dr. Cannada:
My name is Lisa K. Cannada and I am an orthopaedic trauma surgeon, and that means that I take care of broken bones on any part of the body, especially the extremities and arms and legs and the pelvis so that the really bad car accidents and industrial accidents that no one else wants to take care of.

My specialty is orthopeadic trauma. I was trained at the R. Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, Maryland and I have been in practice, now I am in my eighth year of practice. I currently am affiliated with St. Louis University Hospital and my interests are mangled extremities, interarticular fractures. Women’s issues are very important, especially childbirth after pelvic fractures and pregnancy outcomes of orthopedic trauma patients.

Women with pelvic fractures are often told that they might not be able to have children during their hospitalization or that they might, or that they would need a C-section automatically just because they had a pelvic fracture but that is not true. We have proven that with our research.
