Pelvic Floor Therapy: What Is This And How Did It Help You?

Kim recalls the cause of her sexual pain and describes why pelvic floor therapy was a beneficial medical treatment.

Kim:
Upon physical exam I was flinching with the insertion of his finger vaginally and he was very concerned and he said, “It’s not uncommon,” and I have never heard this before, “that just as we have trigger points in our backs or in our calves and we have these muscle tension points, that we can have those vaginally as well,” and as it turns out, upon penile insertion, if I am having sex with my husband and he hit one of those trigger points it was to the moon.

It was so painful, and he said that one of the ways that we might have to deal with this was to come and see a physical therapist here at his clinic who is specifically trained in pelvic floor physical therapy, which was mindboggling to me that there was such a thing and such a person.

Well the physical therapy involved a woman who, as I tell her now affectionately, I felt like I was her sock puppet. So she took her hand and put it inside me about as far as it would go and tried to push and work out these trigger points, and it was very uncomfortable but it was necessary because those muscles had to be fatigued, and she was so respectful in explaining that this was a very unique field that she had training specific to help in this area and then she would hit external muscles around the base of your butt and other places to be helpful.

She actually, very quickly on, was able to fatigue my muscles and what she recommended was that rather than continue coming for physical therapy at some cost, that I could purchase, basically, their dilators.

There are series of vaginal dilators; they are not sex toys, they are not electronic, they are just hard plastic or they can be made of almost like a Steuben glass and they come in varying sizes as small as your pinky and then going up to what would look like a large penis and you work your way up with those and you work out the trigger points on your own in the confines of your own home and she taught me how to do that. So that was really step one and that was incredibly helpful.

Yes, I had pelvic floor therapy with pressure on trigger points to relieve pain. There is also something called a vaginal wand which is curved that can be bought online that helped me more with the trigger points than the vaginal dilators. I was told that the vaginal dilators are more for keeping the vagina area open after having a LEEP conization procedure or they are used so the vagina will not close up after radiation treatment for cervical cancer. The pain was caused from this procedure, and as a result of this pain the muscles in the vaginal area became bunched and tense, the trigger point helped relax these muscles. So ladies avoid LEEP procedures and Hysterectomies for these cause sexual pain and in women with nerve endings that have a intense sensitivity in the cervix and vaginal area along with the enjoyment of sex, these procedures can end your sex life and cause you pain with penetration.
