Hip Replacement Surgery Pain Management: Were The Doctors Accommodating?

Bobette recalls if the staff at McKee Medical Center were flexible with her pain management following hip replacement surgery.

Bobette:
We started out on morphine and I was rather allergic to that and so we only did that one day and switched to another medication which managed the pain equally as well without the side effects. So I felt that they were flexible and sensitive to my needs and that they listened to what I was saying and made the adjustment that was necessary.

Well, if you have been in the hospital before and you’ve had other experiences you know that there are sometimes they go, “Mhm, mhm, mhm,” and nothing happens. These people actually listen to what I was saying and they said, “You know what, there are alternatives,” and when I said, “No, I don’t choose that,” they said, “Okay,” and when they ask if I wanted the third kind of blood and I said, “No, it’s not my blood; I don’t want it,” they said, “Okay.” And so basically they listened to what I said and there was never any argument about it. “Well, you are going to pay for that if you don’t do it this way,” you know? There was never any of that. It was these were my decisions and they honored them.
