Research and Treatment of Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a chronic, progressive disease of the central nervous system. The course and severity of the disease are variable and unpredictable. In early stages, most patients experience intermittent, recurring periods of progressive neurologic disability known as the relapse/remission (RR) form of MS. Symptoms can include visual and/or sensory impairment, chronic or relapsing paralysis, disturbances in speech, swallowing, strength, coordination, gait and bladder and bowel function.

Eventually, most RR patients experience a chronic progressive form of disease where symptoms progressively worsen and are not interrupted by periods of remission. In some cases, chronic disease occurs from the outset, called primary progressive MS.
