Dr. Reitzel introduces himself and discusses the pain a woman experiences during a vaginal delivery.

Dr. Reitzel:
My name is Keith Reitzel. I am a physician anesthesiologist. I have been in private practice now for about 16 years. My area of expertise is high-risk obstetrics anesthesia.

My primary practice is at Banner Desert here in Phoenix, Arizona. We serve a geographic area including Tempe, Chandler, Mesa as well as a little bit of Gilbert, and we occasionally get the Scottsdaleian that comes down, also.

They actually did a study regarding the pain of delivery. I have never had a contraction in my life, okay? But they did this study where they found a thousand guys who had slammed their hand in a car door and traumatically amputated a finger. And they took this visual pain scale from 0 to 10, 10 being the worst pain in their life and they said quick, quick, where is the pain, 8.7, okay?

They then took the same visual pain scale and they gave it to a bunch of primary nulliparous women meaning they have never had a baby in their life in full blown labor and I said quick, quick, where is it on the pain scale, and they said 9.6, okay?

Now I have never had a contraction in my life. I have slammed my hand in a car door, not to the point knocking off a finger or anything like that, but if that was an 8.7 I can only imagine what a 9.6 was. So labor hurts. I mean, it really hurts bad.
