Dr. Adamson describes sperm washing.

Dr. David Adamson:
Sperm washing is a very simple procedure where the male partner gets a specimen of semen by masturbation. This is usually done in a very private room at the laboratory or the doctor’s office and then the specimen is taken and it’s put through some special fluids in the endourology or sperm lab where the sperm are washed.

They swim through the fluids and are centrifuged down and basically what’s done through this process is that a very small volume that’s highly concentrated with lots of sperm in it, and the sperm swim really well, are put in a very tiny amount of fluid and then this fluid can be introduced with a tiny catheter, just a regular general pelvic examination into the woman’s uterus.

So it’s a very simple and quite inexpensive way to get a large number of really good sperm close to the women’s egg. And it does help improve pregnancy rates in many situations.
