Herniated Discs: Which Procedure Did You Have Done?

Twyla discusses the minimally invasive AccuraScope™ back procedure she underwent to treat her herniated discs.

Twyla:
When Dr. Reed diagnosed my back problem I was very relieved because it was not the diagnosis I received from the first doctor and he told me I would be a very good candidate for the surgery, which also gave me confidence.

I never was afraid from the time that we started this process until it was over.

To relieve my back pain Dr. Reed chose the AccuraScope™, which is a minimally invasive procedure.

When we first arrived in Dallas he talked to me about my pain and we reported the next morning and was there about two hours before the surgery.

They came in two at a time, the operating team, told me what they were going to do and there were about eight people there by the time they all got in the room and I told them, “This looks like a party.”

So, we got to the operating room and there was this big table, lots of lights, and there were big pillows piled up in the middle of the table, and you laid your face, face down and then you heard this music and you were gone.

And when I woke up I was free of pain immediately. My daughter was there and she said the pain was gone out of my face from the time I woke up.

I was there about an hour. I got up and went to the car and went back to the hotel. The next day we saw the physician’s assistant and she gave me a script for rehab and I went to physical therapy and it’s just been wonderful.

The rehab itself has been very long because I was down for about three and a half years.

The best part about the surgery is it only lasted an hour and then you had an hour of recovery and you were free from the pain.

I did go back to the hotel and slept two or three hours. I woke up and I felt wonderful.

For the first time I had an appetite. I had not been eating for months because of the extreme pain. It was amazing how, when the minute the pain was gone the appetite bounded back, but it was such a relief.

It’s probably the greatest blessing I have ever had in my life as far as physical blessings go because of the ability to finally feel like you can go and get your life back.

I had an ACDF on my neck a month ago. No one knows how painful a herniated disc can be unless they go through it themselves. How can one feel like eating when they are in such pain? How can one sleep when they are in such pain? The heating pad was my best friend because the narcotic medications and muscle relaxers did nothing for the pain. Neither did the epidural. As soon as I woke from my surgery my arm and neck pain were gone.

I also know what you mean by having your life back. There is no quality of life when you are in constant pain. I'm so glad I found someone locally who was willing to even consult with me let alone do surgery. I know I will have to have PT but at least the sharp stabbing pains I had in my neck and arms are finally gone.
