Dr. Marc Brand shares the optimal time to perform a hemorrhoid examination.

Dr. Brand:
The sooner it can be done after a bowel movement the better, and the reason is that hemorrhoids tend to try to return to their normal position, and if somebody first goes from being seated to standing, that may help the hemorrhoid return to its normal position. Then the time that it takes to walk from the bathroom back to the examining room may also encourage the hemorrhoid to return to its normal position. What I am looking for is to see that hemorrhoid while it’s sticking out so that I can identify what type of tissue and what location it’s at.
