Hemorrhoids can be uncomfortable, itchy, painful and even lead to more serious complications including bloody stool. They are a fairly common occurrence and do not discriminate between males and females.

Essentially, hemorrhoids are swollen veins around the anus or lower rectum which can cause discomfort due to the fact that there is inflammation in the area.

Also known as "piles," hemmorhoids can be caused by any number of factors. Pregnant women sometimes experience a higher incidence of hemmorhoids than non-pregnant women. This may be due to an increase in constipation, leading to straining during bowel movement.
Aging and the concurrent constipation as well as a lack of fiber or fluids in the diet are other factors that can contribute to hemorrhoids.

Natural remedies such as increasing fiber and fluid intake to soften stools, or getting more physical exercise are always recommended. However, over the counter stool softeners are also helpful.

Please be advised if there is bloody stool or rectum that consulting with your physician is crucial as this may be indicative of a more serious complication.

To treat hemorrhoids, prescription medication is available and, in some instances, surgery is recommended. For more information please see the following websites:
