Lois introduces herself, recalls how she found out she had heart disease, and shares her experience at Banner Desert Medical Center in Mesa, Arizona.
Lois:
Hi, I am Lois. I am a heart patient and I had the medical procedure at Banner Medical Center in Mesa, Arizona and I’d like to share my story with you.
A couple of years ago I had an accident where I broke my hip and I was taken to the hospital and at that time they could not take me in to surgery because I needed a heart specialist. I had no idea that I had a heart problem and they called one in and then I listened to my heart beating in the machines and it was terrifying and yet my hip was hurting and I knew I wanted surgery on the hip first.
So the doctor did okay and I had the hip surgery and then when I started going to a cardiologist regularly after my orthopedic condition I was told that I should have surgery or attention done to it soon and that I had big problems.
And I truthfully ignored most of the advice I got. I thought I could just keep going. I couldn’t accept the idea that I really did have a heart problem although I know I did. I was slow walking, I couldn’t really do too much as far as cleaning and it progressively got worse but I was putting a roof on my house. I had to pay for it and I kept using one excuse after the other.
I wasn’t in pain; just a weakness, and they admitted me and they were doing tests I guess. That was on a Thursday morning, very early in the morning that I went in and then they evidently looked into all my conditions and I had surgery on a Sunday, but I found out later that during the night, the Saturday night I believe it was, that I had had two heart attacks and I didn’t even know it because I was out. And I do remember waking up and telling them and they told me my condition was very bad and I should have surgery and they would look into it the next week. I said, “No, today’s a good day to do it,” and I said they did.
They took me in the surgery and I had the surgery and I don’t remember much for a couple of days after that, but they put you on monitors and someone’s with you 24 hours a day and they will keep you alive. That’s what, my son was there and he was so impressed with what they do and how they took care of me. I was never left alone until I came out of whatever I was in, but they purposely keep you and I said, “That was it,” and it was a wonderful, successful surgery. The doctors were amazed and I am amazed and I am very fortunate.
