For years, when most people got sick or had a health concern, they visited a doctor in-person to receive care. But as health technology develops, the ways patients and physicians connect is changing.

Telemedicine, which includes online doctor visits, allow patients and doctors to connect through video streaming. Not only are online doctor visits beneficial to patients who want to communicate with a medical professional on their time, but it is also a great option for doctors.

After working in her own private practice, Dr. Mia Finkelston decided to make the switch to seeing patients using LiveHealth Online. Today she serves as medical director of Online Care Group, P.C., a group of doctors who see patients using LiveHealth Online.

“This has been a good thing for my career,” Dr. Finkelston said. “I am able to work more and still be able to enjoy my family time. It is a great thing for a health care provider who is a working mom or dad.”

With LiveHealth Online, patients can speak with a doctor and get their health questions answered via a live video visit on their smartphone, tablet or PC on their time, especially at times when their own doctor may not be available.

The tool is an especially helpful option for moms with younger children, Finkelston said. In addition to weekdays, doctors using LiveHealth Online are available on weekends, holidays, when families might need them the most.

“I wish I had this with my kids when they were younger,” Dr. Finkelston said.

Dr. Finkelston’s children have all gone off to college now. She finds that for moms like herself it is nice to have the continuity of care and know that even when her children are away at college, they can see licensed doctors whenever they need to.

“I always knew about telemedicine,” Dr. Finkelston said. “It was a fortuitous day when I found out about LiveHealth Online.”

As a physician who sees patients using LiveHealth Online, Dr. Finkelston has noticed not only the convenience LiveHealth Online offers patients, but also the flexibility it creates for doctors and their schedules.

She is able to see patients any time, and they can come back to speak with her again for continued care.

Dr. Finkelston also likes the fact that she is able to speak with patients in their own home, where they can easily show her what medicine they are taking and what foods they are eating to support their health.

Typically, the time it takes for Dr. Finkelston to have a visit with a patient is less than what the wait time at an Emergency Room or Urgent Care might be.

“You really never know when you are going to need it,” Dr. Finkelston said. “We hold a high standard of care and for the patients it’s huge to have their health concerns solved quickly.”

Dr. Finkelston recommends online doctor visits to patients and doctors alike. As a person that does not define herself as “tech savvy,” she finds LiveHealth Online easy to use as a doctor.

If patients are interested in trying online doctor visits, Dr. Finkelston recommends downloading the LiveHealth Online app and registering online. When you’re ready to speak with a doctor, she suggests patients find a quiet place to talk, make sure they are relaxed, be ready to answer questions regarding their health concerns, and understand their follow-up protocol from the appointment.

“With telemedicine, we are serving a deficit in the medical community,” Dr. Finkelston said. “Schools are teaching telemedicine skills to medical students. Hopefully this will be the norm the future.”
