Lean Cuisines, Smart Ones and Healthy Choice Brands Are Not as Lean, Smart or Healthy as We Think

Doesn’t it sometimes seem that the more information we have about food, the fatter we get? I do try to eat as fresh and colorfully as possible, I swear! But instead of living in the Land of Perfection (Fresh! Organic! Raw! Local Farmers! Save the World!) I live in Human Land where there are occasional evenings (last night being a good example for me) where it’s well past 8pm, I still have not eaten and I’m so tired that making a hearty salad from scratch is just too much trouble. The simplest thing like cleaning and chopping raw foods and eating them with delicious balsamic vinegar is too much to contemplate. Darn that kids-home-husband-work-life thing that interferes with my quest for Nutritional Nirvana!

Now that my disclaimer has been noted, I do what I have to do in order to eat something low fat and low cal, and just fill myself with something so I don’t binge on salty foods at 10pm (a trait of mine that I avoid like the plague) . I throw a vegetarian Lean Cuisine in the microwave and eat it on the sofa. Quite frankly, it did the job (okay, it tasted nice too, after I put a little parmesan on top!) and filled me up so I didn’t go to bed with a growling stomach.

I woke up to one though! I flicked on the Today Show to see a segment on the calorie and fat counts of the big diet brands like Lean Cuisine, Weight Watchers Smart Ones and Healthy Choice. It was very disheartening to hear how numbers and percentages are bandied around on the packages, with no reason needed to come anywhere near the truth. If the FDA allows manufactures to throw any number they want on the package (to within a 20 percent accuracy – a huge gap right there), then I suppose being more accurate isn’t at the top of the priority list simply because it doesn’t have to be.

The Today Show sent the most popular meals to a food lab to be analyzed for fat and calorie content. The results were a bit distressing. The Lean Cuisine brand has several meals that are well under their advertised calorie and fat counts, and the same with some Healthy Choice varieties. Some meals up to 20 percent. Good news for me, at least! However, some of the other meals and other brands had up to 20 percent more calories than advertised. The chief offender was Weight Watchers Sweet and Sour Chicken with far more calories than advertised and an enormous 350 percent more fat than they claimed! Weight Watchers said they will conduct an internal investigation to see if this is true.

And as one outraged consumer said “...the government is preaching to us about obesity”…yet allowing food manufacturers to be up to 20 percent off in their nutritional claims. The FDA refused an interview but a representative for these food companies went on air to explain that portions aren’t always exact so that labels cannot be exact. They were based on averages. Fair enough! But since portions are made on an assembly line and certainly not 20 percent different to each other size-wise, it doesn’t make sense that the advertised nutritional contents can be 20 percent off.

As some shoppers mused – no wonder people can’t lose weight while using some of these foods – they are getting far more calorific bang for their buck. This is definitely a case of less being far more than we bargained for.

What’s the moral here? Eat these meals as occasional easy alternatives and stick to fresh and unprocessed foods in general. Oh and don't believe at least 20 percent of what a label tells us.

idiots..people to lose weight you need to EXERCISE! get off your fat asses and workout! geeze..thats what you get for relying on these meals for weight loss.duh. and for years..really eating this crap for years?!

You're very ignorant. Exercise is about 30% of the battle whereas diet is roughly 70%. If you want to lose weight, you can do so by limiting your calorie intake. But if you want to be healthy, you need to do both. Take a 20 minute walk, at least, every single day. Aerobics and strength training will help a great deal, but if you are blowing your diet then it all won't mean a damn thing. I eat a Healthy Choice meal once a week and have started 3 months ago. Also, I work 15 hour days/70 hour weeks so I don't get many chances to work out. But since I've limited my intake to around 1400 calories a day, I have lost 12 pounds. Keep your nasty tongue in your mouth where it belongs, or somebody with sharper wits is going to cut it off.

This story on the Today Show made me FURIOUS!!! I've been eating Smart Ones for several years for lunch at work. I'm also a member of Weight Watchers, and I hope they truly DO look into this. They need to either get the issue resolved or drop their connection to Smart Ones and Heinz!!!
Heinz, SHAME ON YOU!!!! What else are you mislabeling?!
