Wendy, who has alopecia, describes the "hair systems" or wigs she wears from National Hair Centers and shares how they have changed her life.

Wendy:
Hi, I am Wendy. I lost my hair when I was 3 years old and I have gone through all of the stages of alopecia – alopecia areata, which is patches of baldness, alopecia totalis, which is where you lose all your hair on your head and your eyebrows and eyelashes, and now I have alopecia universalis and this is what alopecia universalis is – complete hair loss throughout your whole body.

And this is a story of how I’ve created my own solution. So over the years I have tried, I have worn many different types of wigs and most of them have been synthetic and they are very hot; they are very itchy. They are not custom fit. I have a very small head and they were always too big and I was always trying to make them just feel like part of me.

And it was a really big struggle for years and years and years until I found National Hair Centers and they have so many different options of hair systems, as it’s called now-a-days. Most of their hair systems are human hair and the one I have on is top-quality European hair. It is custom-fit to my head and it fits like a glove and I don’t have to wear tape to keep it on, no glue and it’s this new technology where there’s silicone in the strategic places and it grips to my bald little head and it’s fabulous.

Since I have been wearing this hair system, when I am out in public, just when I walk out of my house I just feel like I could conquer the world and I fit in and I am normal, and I look like everybody else. And I don’t have that sense that somebody is looking at me and assuming when I wore my baseball hat that I had cancer.

I don’t feel as vulnerable as I did before when I felt that I had no other choices but to walk around in a baseball hat. It’s there. It’s comfortable. It’s light. It breathes and I can live my life – that’s huge right there.

One of the things that I have found since I found this new hair system is that I can sit there and tuck my hair behind my ears and like normal girls do and flick it and it’s not going anywhere and it just feels so, so good. I have a new found sense of freedom, a new found sense of confidence, self-esteem.

I don’t have to worry about putting my outfit together around a baseball hat because that’s what I had done for years. Now I can think, “What am I going to wear?” And I can get excited about what I am going to wear and hair goes with everything, every outfit. That’s actually kind of funny because it’s true. That is so true.

Don’t let it define you. Hair makes us feel good. It makes us feel sexy and confident, but don’t let it define who you are.
