Hair Transplant: Will The Donor Site Be Noticeable? - Dr. Laris

Dr. Laris explains if the donor site will be noticeable following follicular unit hair transplantation.

Dr. Laris:
The patients ask me about the donor site. Will that area be obvious that people will notice loss of hair from there, and actually no.

What we do is we are taking a strip of skin out and it sounds horrendous but it’s really not. The skin is where the hair follicle is. We are not just removing hairs.

If we were removing hairs you’d be bald in that area but we are actually removing a strip of skin. The typical strip is about as wide as my finger and length depends on how many grafts we are going to do.

Once we remove that strip, we actually bring long hair to long hair again, so you have hair against hair. So you just have a fine line, little scar in the back.

If you shave the head you can see the scar but even a very short haircut, a military haircut on men doesn’t show that scar.

So that area won’t be void of hair. We are just removing the whole hair producing unit and moving it to the front.

If we look at scalps we all have a little bit of extra play in our scalps, so we are removing the excess.
