Dr. Laris shares what you can expect during your initial hair restoration consultation.
Dr. Laris:
When a woman comes to see me for hair loss there’s a few things we need to talk about because hair loss isn’t always hereditary hair loss.
It isn’t always the kind that could be fixed with surgery or hair transplantation. Actually most often when I see women, they have hair loss that’s due to other problems, medical problems, hair or scalp disease problems.
So with women we really are careful to go through a lot of questions. I want to know have they had this hair loss for a long time? What’s their family history like? Do they have any other medical problems going on at all that might coexist with hair loss?
And we actually do a female hair loss panel, which is a blood test that we do to check for many different things. We check for anemia. We check for iron deficiency. We check for hormone imbalances.
We check for thyroid disease. Check for things like lupus, because all of those things can cause hair loss and many times when women come in they think they’ve got hereditary hair loss or hair loss that can’t be fixed.
And often times we find that their thyroids off or they’ve got anemia and when we fix those medical problems their hair grows back.
So if you are going to a physician who specializes in hair loss he is going to check those things as well as consider surgical options for you if they are appropriate.
What I would caution is to make sure you get checked for those things because for women, we don’t really know for sure until those things are checked that its hereditary hair loss that’s surgically treatable.
So you don’t want to have a medical problem and have it surgically treated and have that treatment failed because the medical problem continues to give you hair loss.

Dr. Lee Laris, D.O., is the Medical Director and Chief Cosmetic Surgeon of Phoenix Skin Medical Surgical Group in Phoenix, Ariz. Dr. Laris graduated from Gannon University in Erie, Pa., in 1981 and continued his education at the College of Osteopathic Medicine of the Pacific in Pomona, Calif., where he received his Medical Degree in 1987. He completed his internship at Grandview Hospital in Dayton, Ohio.
