Follicular Unit Hair Transplantation: What Is This? - Dr. Laris

Dr. Laris describes follicular unit hair transplantation.

Dr. Laris:
We do hair transplantation in our office, follicular unit transplantation especially. We take hair from the back of the scalp typically or the sides of the scalp, places where the hair is more voluminous.

We have more hair there and more density so we are able to take a strip and it’s a small strip of skin and we look at that strip. We take the strip and we slice it into little slices like slices off of a loaf of bread, and in those little slices we can actually see the hairs.

So we actually under magnification, separate those slices into individual follicular unit. That way we know the follicular units are intact, the follicle is still good and will grow a good hair.

Those then are placed into little recipient sites, tiny little nicks in the skin in the scalp in exact places where the hair’s been lost and we are able to place those little grafts into those little sites, able to make the hair grow in the same direction that the hair is growing normally.

So we are able to match your hair direction and that way when these hairs are placed in there the little follicle takes hold, starts to grow a new hair bulb, a new hair.

And those hairs will grow out exactly like your existing hair, and the great thing about that is those hairs can be combed, bleached, dyed – anything you want to do with them, curl, blown dry. You can’t hurt them once they are growing.
