6 Essential Oils to Use Against Allergies

By June 1, 2017 - 11:16am

Allergies may strike any time. It could be during Spring or Winter. It could also be in late Summer or in the middle of Fall. But not matter when they would occur, know that there are round-the-clock solutions available for you – essential oils.

So what are essential oils? These oils are derived from different parts of the plants – leaves, bark, roots, fruits, and even seeds. They are usually diffused into the air and used in various bath and spa products to stimulate the body. Then again, they can also be used to alleviate the signs of allergies.
Here are some essential oils to use against allergies:

1. Tea Tree Essential Oil
Although there aren't any sufficient studies that can prove how tea tree oil can provide relief to allergies, many claim that it can actually combat the symptoms. The reason is that this oil has anti-inflammatory properties that can relieve itching, which is the most obvious manifestation of allergies. To use tea tree oil, apply it topically to the affected area. Do not ingest it.

2. Lemon Essential Oil
Lemon essential oil is widely used in aromatherapy to improve alertness and boost energy levels. However, this oil can also help unclog your sinuses, when allergies begin to manifest. When using this oil, it is advised to avoid exposing your skin to the sun as there might be possible reactions. If you wish to use it to alleviate the signs of allergies, simply diffuse the oil and inhale.

3. Eucalyptus Essential Oil
Like lemon essential oil, eucalyptus can help relieve congestion brought about by allergies. It offers a cooling sensation to allow you to breathe easily. Using this essential oil is just like that of lemon. Simply diffuse it into the air or breathe it directly from the bottle for an instant relief.

4. Lavender Essential Oil
Lavender is one of the most popular essential oils nowadays. Its many benefits can explain why. Not only does it help soothe the symptoms. It also reduces inflammation. To use this oil, you can dilute it with a carrier oil like coconut oil and then add the mixture to your bath. You may also diffuse it for aromatherapy purposes.

5. Peppermint
Another popular essential oil, peppermint allows you to breathe easily when diffused into the air. But when diluted with coconut oil, it can be applied topically to relieve itch.

6. Sandalwood, Ravensara Oil, and Frankincense
There has been studies that prove the combination of sandalwood, ravensara oil, and frankincense essential oils can treat allergic rhinitis. After using the solutions, patients who participated in the study, have experienced lesser sneezing and reduced itchiness. This goes to show that the combination of the three essential oils can help treat symptoms related to allergies. To use, mix the oils with a carrier oil of your choice to dilute their strength. And then, spray into the air.

Take note, though. If it is your first time to use essential oils, be sure to practice caution. Do a skin test first to have an idea how these oils react to your skin. Also, never apply these oils directly to your skin. Be sure to dilute them first. As they say, "It's better safe, than sorry."
