RLS is real!

By November 12, 2010 - 6:57pm

HI, this is the intitial post in this new group. My name is Donna, and I have had RLS since I was 14 yrs old. I am looking forward to meeting other women here who have the same sleep issues. We also have "credibility" issues with RLS, unfortunately. There are even people in the medical field who do not quite believe that RLS is the sleep stealer that it is. So, how can we expect "regular" people not to be cynical about this strange sounding affliction. IF you have it, you certainly know that it is real, we do use the word "suffer" because we do suffer and struggle every day. There is no cure, nbut we who have RLS should never sway from raising awareness. Severe sleep deprivation is no joke. RLS in itself will not kill you, but the effects from it might. Sleep deprivation can cause lots of issues like high blood pressure, severe daytime sleepiness, lost relationships, loss of employment, etc. Tell us what RLS means to you, and if you have found us and have questions, please do ask. We are just getting started here, so let's see what happens. Welcome!

I hate to say, I used to laugh at my mom when I was a kid about her legs "jumping" all the time. I was a kid what did I know? I am 40 now, I dont have it as bad as she does but wow there was no reason to laugh!! I had to call her about a year ago and tell her I was sorry!! Now I have it! I only have troubles 5-10 nights a month, but wow I hate it already!!!

I started having RSL around the same time that i started having menopause symptoms. I haven't spoken to a Dr about it as I don't have a regular Dr. I looked it up on the internet. My legs cramp a lot while sleeping. This would wake me up and I would need to walk around in severe pain until it went away. I get terrible charlie horse type cramps. Sometimes it's only in my toes. Nevertheless it wakes me and I am unable to sleep. I also sometimes feel like I have ants or something crawling inside my legs. I twist and turn the whole night. I don't have it every night and on occasion it happens during the daytime too I'm learning how to deal with it and would love to find a natural remedy to help keep it from happening.

I came across this while checking something for my wife. I have RLS and my restless toes would not let me sleep. I also have Parkinson Disease being successfully treated with dopamine. My neurologist prescribed Requip XL for my RLS and it works!!! I started with 2mg, then 4mg, then 6 mg until the 8mg dose did the trick. Ask your doctor about it.
