When did menopause start for you?

By HERWriter Guide July 31, 2010 - 5:25am

I'm not near the stage yet but I know she's a comin' at some stage! Based on the women in my family, I'm about 15 years away from menopause but one never knows.

I wonder how old other women were when menopause began and what were the first signs that this part of life had begun?

Hi Susan, and thanks for replying. I am only 45.. lol I am to young for this, but it is happening. I still have bad bouts of depression even though things in my life are great. The hotflashes are terrible, but I am trying soy products in my diet to help. I noticed the flashes are worse around the time I should start my cycle. I just recently got married, and my poor husband don't know what to think. He is just as lost as I am on how to deal with it, but he tells me we will go through it together. :-) I think he is also going through male menapause, or at least it seems that way sometimes....LOL Again, thanks for replying. It is nice to know there is someone out there who cares.

I feel it started for me with irregular cycle, then I completly stopped stopped at age 44, I guess that would be the first symptom I had. I also noticed that I seemed depressed without reason, that had been going on for about 2 yrs I guess. Doctor wanted to put me on Antidepressants, but I did not take them. I did not feel I needed a pill to solve my problem. I did not suffer from hotflashes until this year. Those are terrible. I feel like I am going to internally combust sometimes. I also suffer from bad depression sometimes. Now I understand why I was feeling depressed back then-I was premenapausal. Thanks for listening! :-)

Menopause starts around age 50 for most, but can be early depending on certain factors... More on early menopause: http://www.womentowomen.com/menopause/earlymenopause.aspx

I started having irregular periods about a year ago, at the age of 51 years. Some are like my regular periods and last about 4 days. But a few have had very heavy flows and last about a week. Along with the heavy periods came severe anxiety (it did lessen during the day, although I woke in the morning feeling terrible). The anxiety started a day or two before the period and ebbed along with the blood flow. It was gone about 3 to 6 days after the period ended. The last heavy period generated a time of great energy and creativity. That time started about a day before the period and is continuing as I write, about 9 days after the end of the period. I hope it continues further since it feels great and I'm getting a lot of good work done.
This all said, I started having some extreme mood swings about a year and a half before the irregular periods started. Some of this could have been circumstantial - I was still feeling the effects of a move from one city to another (along with a different job and leaving friends and family) from about 3 years ago. However, everything is finally panning out - I have a beautiful new home and am starting to make real friendships in my adopted city.

I had heard friends of mine talk about hot flashes when they were in their 40"s. I couldn't understand what they were talking about. I'm 55. It all started last year for me. I would be working and all of a sudden I would be overcome by this tremendous sense of heat on my face. I only had sweats about 5 times that I can remember. I do get hot and cold though. I was shopping with my daughter(27) and she said mom why is your face all red? I was having a small hot flash at the time. I try to stay positive, I pray about it a lot and I even practice ignoring it sometimes. I had a period in September of 2009, but haven't had one since. I don't want to use hormone therapy and have been investigating natural options. I will say that my sex drive has diminished, but it doesn't keep me from having sex with my husband. My family has noticed some changes, like loss of memory, fatigue but they just go with the flow. They try and support me even though they don't understand it all. What us women have to go through in life is nothing compared to what our Lord went through. God Bless you all on your journey through menopause.

Hi Lisa,
The symptoms can be more than annoying and if they are too much and your quality of life is compromised it is time to talk with your doctor and ask for help. Don't forget some alternative suggestions to ask your Doctor about too.

My doctor thinks I have started it and I am 49 - my mother finished her menstruation at 47, but mine is still going strong. But the other symptoms like insomnia, fluctuating libido, weight gain, hot flushes and breast pain have all come on this year with avengence.
I know it is a natural state of being, but I do hope it is not a long one, lol.

I was 42 one day fine then unbearable hot flashes the next. My doctor thought I was too young for menopause so he did blood work to check my hr factor and my thyroid I think he was more surprised than I was that I was fully menopausal.
