living in the well

By October 27, 2011 - 2:17pm

my issue is that i lose about 10 - to 14 days in a six week period living in what i call the well. at that time i have all the classic signs of depression social withdraw, difficulty sleeping , feeling hopeless, no apetite, the list goes on and on... slowly after this time passes i start to feel like my old self again. My ob/gyn says that it is depression and i have tried anti-depressants but with no relief. I feel it is hormonal because the other weeks i feel fine. Help do not want to go back to well. its a very dark place ...

Perhaps an ob/gyn is not now the correct doctor. Anti-depressants at one point in my life only made me very sick and made me gain weight and made me almost comatose. My natural inclination would be to say I bet it is hormones, and not just the female ones---you don't say how old you are---but there are the thyroid hormones and a huge number women, including me, develop hypothyroidism in their 50's and this also is a part of, interferes with female hormones, causes depression. I think you need extensive tests of ALL your thyroid hormones and anti-bodies along with all of your female hormones-----I sort of fired my ob/gyn even though I had liked him a lot and now have an m.d. with a naturopathic background and who is a hormonal specialist and who tries to use bioidential hormones when possible but follows the whole person---if you aren't sleeping, don't feel like eating right, cannot exercise, it is a vicious circle and a cycle as well--anything that acts like you are talking about sounds like a situation with a variety of your hormones----sometimes an ob/gyn frankly becomes too narrow and you need a doctor with a wider view of you and the world. Just a thought,.

We're a group devoted to the education and support of something that will happen naturally to all of us at some stage: menopause. No longer called things like "the change" in quiet female-only groups; menopause is a normal stage of life that signals one part of life leaving, and a potentially fantastic one marching in! Some of us will need help, support and advice during this time, and some of us have lots of it to give. Light-hearted or troubled, we can swap experiences and stories, post questions and worries - all within a compassionate community that offers professional resources. Any woman, from 18 to 80, can benefit from membership! Let the fun and friendships begin...
