My psychiatrist does not agree

By October 28, 2011 - 12:19pm

I have used marijuana for years to help me cope with anxiety and depression issues as well as just for fun. When I finally got up the nerve to ask my psychiatrist if ahe agreed with medicinal herb she said it was only appropriate for people with extreme physical pain or terminal illness and that it would mess with my medication. If that is so then would it not also mess with other meds for pai or terminal illnesses? Anyway I still smoke daily and it helps keep me calm. Every now and then I get a strain of herb that makes me paranoid as hell so I have to be careful. I love my reefer and honestly do not know what I would do without it. If I didnt have it I would not have been able to stop doing cocaine and meth 6 yrs ago.

Thanks for responding. It has been a long time since my last post and I have cut down on smoking a lot but still do everyday. I do not agree with my doctor about medical MJ and depression patients, but oh well. Would like to connect with other women who use medical MJ as well. Message me. :-)

Hi MsGrape,

Having lived in San Francisco, CA (where marijuana is very accepted), I don't think your story is too out of the ordinary. I think that because it was made illegal and stigmatized for so long, it's hard for people to accept it as medicine, let alone a recreational drug. Right now, it's a controversial issue (depending on where you are). Having been legalized for medicinal uses in many states recently (and decriminalized in some cities), I think and hope that the stigma will start to dissipate. It's very sad to me that many people can't accept it as medicine when it truly helps some individuals. Not to mention that oftentimes, it can be a more natural treatment for many conditions, with less side-effects than synthetic drugs.

However, that doesn't mean that smoking every day is good either. As you probably know, there are safer ways to smoke (like using a vaporizer), but even that doesn't make smoking on a daily basis "healthy."

Chances are, if you get a second opinion from another psychiatrist, you may get a different answer. I think it really depends on who you ask.

Be well,

Danielle.

I have a friend who is using medical marijuana to treat her pain and would like to see if others have had success with it. The greater debate is should marijuana be a medical option? Trying to understand the pros and cons of this and would like to hear your story.
