Surviving the smells of Christmas

By November 19, 2010 - 7:03pm

While chestnut roasting on an open fire may be great for some people, those of us with COPD for the most part have trouble with strong smells..pine makes me sick, and the malls atre full of everyday people wearing all kinds of perfume ..you get the idea..lol
But with a little planning you can still enjoy the holidays without turning blue.
I trade the smell of scented candles with cimmimaon and nutmeg, or vanilla, orange spice and things like that..never had anyone complain about the smell of pumkin or apple pie neither.
How about you how do you make it though, and how do you get your guest to understand that you would be most thankful if they would save the new pweium they got for another time when you aren't there without hurting anyones feelings?

Hi all, I'm so happy to hear I'm not the only one with attitudes toward strong smells and odors. Perfume is my worst especially at church where i have had to move my seat. Or in an elevator where we are trapped , fortunately only for a short time, We just have to do the best we can and avoid places or situations where we know ahead of time. Sun tan lotion is also quite sickening and will bring on an asthma attack. I'm trying to find the happy things to bring out and you know what , I for one am so grateful that the good Lord has seen fit to help me get thru the day with my breathing, as we all know it is a struggle as soon as we get up in the am. But we do get up Praise God for every day he gives us. I am on a lung transplant list at Mayo clinic and I try to live every day to the fullest. Do not let this disease hold you down, keep you home or decline social invitations because you have to carry your o2. I have also asked my friends and family to refrain from wearing any perfume when around me but I must say the men are the worst with their after shave etc. Hope you all have a great summer , stay in air conditioning and out of the humidity which will drain your strength. Sit by the pool if you can with a cool drink and give God the glory for each day he gives us.

So my dear, I'm quite confident socially, but I too am stymied about a few social situations re smells and odors. Suddenly I am very irritated by incense, soaps, lotions and potions that people put on their bodies. I did ask friends if I could extinguish their candles recently, they were glad to do so but I am wondering if anyone else has a method of asking folks not to wear smelly lotions & potions. I can deal with family and close friends...Last week a friend a friend showered and reeked of shampoo/soap or some such; really irritating to my lungs. We're quite social and I imagine I'll just have to retreat or leave some situations if the odors are too strong. If the odor is rectifiable easily, e.g., burning candles, incense or potpourri I'll ask that it be put away but I'm not sure I'll ask someone to re-shower w/non-scented products. I did advise the Triple A guy the other day that since he deals w/the public he might want to use unscented products to avoid irritating the lung of folks like me. Penny and I need your tips! Thanks
