IVF is Still the Best Way to Deal with Infertility Problems

By March 9, 2019 - 1:13am

Thirty eight years have passed since the birth of the first child conceived using the IVF procedure. Ever since that time, more than 4 million children have been born around the world thanks to in vitro fertilization (IVF). Despite the resounding success, this method is still controversial and gives rise to rumors and myths.

First, let's understand what IVF is and then consider the most common misconceptions associated with IVF.

So, IVF is an abbreviation of "in vitro fertilization". From the Latin "extra corpora" is translated as "outside the body." That's right, fertilization occurs outside the body of a woman - during IVF, the egg is removed from her body and fertilized artificially in a test tube and Petri dish. The resulting embryo is placed in an incubator, where it develops within 2-5 days. Then it is transferred into the uterus of a woman for further development.

Currently, IVF is the most effective method for achieving pregnancy.

Myths about in vitro fertilization (IVF) procedure

  • IVF is effective only after 35 years

It is quite the opposite, the younger a woman is, the higher the chance that IVF will result in pregnancy and childbirth. After 40 years, the probability of pregnancy even after IVF treatment is significantly reduced and by the age of 45 it is less than 1%.

  • IVF is a painful procedure

Embryo transfer is a painless procedure that is comparable to a cervical screening test. The only painful stage during IVF is a puncture of the ovaries to collect eggs. But this procedure lasts only 10–15 minutes and is performed under intravenous anesthesia, during which the patient is asleep.

  • First IVF cycle is always unsuccessful

The younger the patient is, the higher her chances of getting pregnant at the first IVF attempt. At the age under 36, the odds of getting pregnant are around 67%. Thus, more than half of young women become pregnant on the first try!

  • IVF treats infertility

The IVF procedure is becoming more and more sophisticated and effective each year and can help an increasing number of couples to become pregnant. If the “classic” IVF does not help, then there are still treatment options using donor egg cells, donor sperm cells and surrogate motherhood.

The earlier you go to a reproductive embryologist, the less likely you will need to use the donor’s biological materials.

  • IVF leads to multiple pregnancy

During IVF treatment, no more than two embryos are transferred, since multiple pregnancy increases the risk of miscarriage, premature birth and other obstetric problems. When two embryos are transferred, 25% of patients under 37 years old become pregnant with twins

In order to reduce the number of complications for mothers and children, practically all patients under 36 years old are implanted with only one embryo.

  • Cesarean section is the only option to give birth after IVF procedure

Pregnancy after IVF is no different from natural pregnancy. Therefore, whether there going to be a cesarean section or a natural childbirth process totally depends on the health of a pregnant woman and a child and has nothing to do with the method of conception.

  • In vitro children are more vulnerable to genetic disorders and suffer from physiological abnormalities

Numerous studies have shown that the health of children conceived with IVF is no different from the health of children conceived in the usual way. With multiple pregnancy, there is a high risk of premature birth of children with low body mass. It is going to be more difficult for premature born children to adapt to the external environment. However, their problems are not directly related to IVF, but only to the duration of pregnancy and the overall health conditions of a mother.

Today, IVF is carried out in conjunction with pre-implantation genetic diagnosis (PGD). It allows doctors to determine the presence of chromosomal and monogenic genetic diseases in the embryo prior to its transfer to the uterine cavity of a female. Thus, IVF with PGD allows giving birth to a genetically healthy child even to those couples, who would not be able to do so without IVF.

  • IVF leads to gaining excess weight during pregnancy course

The weight of a young mother depends on her lifestyle and nutrition. A normal pregnancy does not prevent her from continuing to practice sports, yoga, Pilates, swimming, or to be engaged in a special physical training program for pregnant women. More and more women understand this and after giving birth they still look attractive, healthy and are in excellent physical shape.

  • IVF impairs women's health

Research on this issue is conducted in the world constantly. To date, there are reliable scientific data regarding the total safety of hormonal stimulation during IVF treatment.

If you are facing an infertility problem, do not give up your hope to have children one day!

The Network of Reproductive Medical Centers (ISO 9001:2015 certified) “Mother and Child” that employs the highly renowned reproductive embryologists and long-standing members of the European Society of Human Reproduction and Embryology (ESHRE) and the American Society for Reproductive Medicine (ASRM) has long been successfully carrying out different types of IVF procedures that helped thousands of people throughout the world to find the happiness of parenthood.
