Any foods you were once able to eat you cant anymore?
Mine are
- Pasta (too heavy)
- Steak (too thick of meat, doesnt sit well)
- Pastries (obv)
On the upside, I havent touched McDonalds or Burger King or any Fast food since my surgery - which was my biggest downfall!!!!
Hi, I'm 8-1/2 years out. It took awhile, but eventually I became able to eat all of what you're describing. One caveat on the steak - even this far out, I MUST cut it into tiny bites and chew it well! It does help if it's a tender cut of meat and not overcooked, too. You don't want pieces any larger than the eraser on top of your pencil. Pasta gets better with time, but a little goes a long way. You've got to eat it s-l-o-w-l-y too, or up it comes! And chew, always chew.
My spouse and grandkids, alas, love Burger King. Fortunately, I despise it, and also, it just makes me sick to eat it any more, so I don't think you'll have to worry about eating that again.
Pastries . . . well, that's another story. For some reason, I do ok with that. I don't eat a lot because they never were a weakness, but I just discovered those "butter braids" the kids sell as fundraisers at school and Ooh-la-la! The Bavarian creme filled one is to die for! So yes, I eat that. Lucky for me, they only come out once a year!
I do find I'm a lot more picky now. I don't eat frozen pizza (yuk) or other prepared foods. They just don't go down, nor do they sound appealing any more. I love salad (yes, I know, we're NOT supposed to eat them, but I chop it up small with a sharp knife and crunch it up well; I also have so many other veggies in it that there is barely any lettuce in it anyway).
I still have problems with sugar; I eat Mike & Ike candy now and then, and boy can I tell! I get the shakes, sweat profusely from scalp to toes, get weak and have to lie down, and just basically feel horrible. Needless to say, I don't eat them a lot. However, there is an antidote if you absolutely must eat sugar - a handful of almonds, or better yet, my homemade "trail mix," which is a mixture of dry roasted, unsalted almonds, dried fruit bits (basically mixed dried fruit chopped up really tiny), dried cherries, orange flavored craisins, dry roasted, unsalted peanuts, and raisins. It's good, it's full of protein, and the natural sugar brings you out of the "attack" fairly quickly. And no chocolate!
The only thing I absolutely cannot - and will not - eat any more is cottage cheese. They made me eat it after surgery with Prilosec in it and blech! I'll never get that taste and texture out of my head. {shudder!}
