How to Know If You Have Periodontal Disease?

By October 8, 2018 - 2:26am

Dental diseases are very sneaky. They can develop completely unnoticed until the unbearable tooth pain strikes you. This pain will definitely lead you to a doctor, no matter if you are afraid or not. In many cases, teeth can be saved and serve you further. If not, they are removed and replaced by prosthetics or implants.
But diseases in your teeth is not the only reason why you may lose them. If your gums are unhealthy and you do nothing about it, you have a risk to even lose your healthy teeth. This is why it is important to know how the earliest stages of periodontal disease look like and start treatment in time.
How Does Periodontal Disease Develop?
The tissues of your gums get inflamed (it may happen due to various causes, very often there’s a metabolic or immunity disorder). If the inflammation continues, the process spreads further and deeper. The inflammation reaches the tissues that surround your teeth and hold them in their alveolar sockets.
Symptoms of Periodontal Disease
It is important to react as soon as you notice these warning signs in your mouth. It is necessary to solve the problem before it gets deeper to the alveolar sockets. Even though the periodontal disease is mostly a chronic problem, it can be controlled with a mindful treatment and proper care of your oral health.
If you notice any of the following symptoms, you should make an appointment with your periodontist:
1. Your breath smells bad.
2. Your teeth are covered with hard plaque or calculus. It can reach even deeper – under the gums when they get detached and form the so-called gum pockets.
3. Your gums have changed their color – they turned red especially in places of contact with the teeth.
4. Your gums bleed easily (even for no reason).
5. Your gums are extremely temperature-sensitive.
6. Your teeth became loose (a severely neglected case).
Treatment of the Disease
The sooner you ask for treatment, the easier will it be to solve the problem. Here are the basic medical manipulations to treat periodontal disease:
1. Cleaning of gum pockets and calculus.
2. Anti-microbial rinses that strengthen the gums.
3. Gum massage that boosts the metabolic processes.
4. Special injections that help gums recover faster.
5. Medical therapy to help the body recover its immunity and remove bacteria.
6. If the teeth become mobile, they are held together with a special splint. Sometimes the disease is so neglected that there is no possibility to save your teeth. They are extracted and replaced by prosthetics (optimally – implants).
What Happens to the Body If the Disease Is Not Treated
Besides the loss of teeth, severe periodontal disease affects the health of our heart, liver, and kidneys. It makes endocrine problems worse. Our body is a mechanism where everything is connected, and if there’s a problem in one part of it, the others will suffer as well. So take care of your gums and treat them in time if necessary.
