5 Best Periodontitis Treatment Methods

By July 29, 2021 - 7:22am

A lot of people have problems with their oral health, and one of them is gum disease or periodontitis. According to the Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), in the United States, adult people who are over 30 have periodontal disease in more than 42 presents. Periodontitis is a disease that is formed due to poor oral hygiene. People neglect oral health and think that oral health does not matter, but it is a miss thinking. Poor oral hygiene may cause big problems: from tooth loss to some kinds of cancer. But you can prevent this just with good oral hygiene, but if you already have periodontitis, we want to introduce you to common treatment methods in this article.

1. Good oral hygiene
People who keep good oral hygiene do not have serious problems with teeth, mostly their teeth are healthy. Good oral hygiene may prevent cavities, tartar, and of course periodontitis. This hygiene includes brushing teeth at least 2 times a day, flossing, using fluoride toothpaste or toothpaste that fights periodontitis, mouth rinses, soft picks, etc. People with inflammations like arthritis should use an electric toothbrush, it would be much more effective. Of course, people should not miss annual dental checkups, they help to prevent all the problems.

2. Scaling and cleaning
This method is one of the most widespread. The method implies that a doctor will clean your mouth from plaque and tartar using special tools or ultrasonic devices. Also, this method includes root planing because bacterias can occur on a rough surface, and this increases the chance of gum disease. Usually, the cleaning takes from 1 to 2 visits, it depends on the person, because we are all different and we have a different plaque accumulation.

3. Flap surgery
Flap surgery is performed when people have a severe form of periodontitis that can not be treated with antibiotics, scaling, or root planning. People who do not have a treatment plan for periodontitis, or even if they ignore this disease, may have serious damage to the supporting structures of teeth, and in addition, this damage leads to tooth loss. Flap surgery may stop the progression process of periodontitis, and it means that a doctor will pull the tissue from teeth to clean and treat the roots and jawbone.

4. Bone and tissue grafting
This process occurs when a person has bone and tissue loss. Bone and tissue grafting means that a doctor will fold back the gum tissue and clean that area from bacteria, tartar, and of course rough tooth surface, then a doctor will place a bite of bone tissue on the place where the bone is lacking. This process allows the bone to regenerate because the bone is living tissue, and bone and tissue grafting may save your teeth from loss. But sometimes people ask for help when it is late, and they have lost a tooth, that is why they need to fill that gap, to avoid serious problems with health in the near future. In most cases, it is recommended to set a dental implant, but dental implants need enough tissue to be set, that is why this procedure is a good choice.

5. Antibiotics
People are often told to try this method to reduce or eliminate bacterias that cause gum disease. This method is prescribed, after non-surgical methods. However, many dental specialists know that this method has a giant problem- antibiotic resistance. All in all, in most cases people treat periodontitis using only non-surgical methods.

The bottom line
In conclusion, all of these methods are good treatment methods against periodontitis, but you should contact your doctor and have an appointment to recognize the problem level and understand what method fits you best.
