quality of life

By October 28, 2011 - 2:58pm

I have suffered with a chronic illness for 13 years. How do we achieve quality of life when we are robbed of so much?

Thanks Susan for your concern. Both of my parents are out of the country travelling with their partners so I went to stay with my Grandma. I'm okay now. I have been having a problem with my right toe nail...last year with my insomnia I banged it in the middle of the night and it had to be removed last summer due to infection and it was loose. The toe never swelled back down so as the nail grew back...I have had an ingrown toe nail around the sides and front of my toe if that makes sense...well it just got removed again this morning and hurts a great deal..will require a lot of care and more appointments to monitor for infection...if it growns back again with the same problem it will be removed at the root. My gosh...this is painful enough but I am reminding myself I have had much worse pain...kidney stones several times, a smashed femur and fractured knee joint and 16 years of chronic pain. I can do this!
Not a good week and a bit. Except the weather here in Canada where I live...30 degrees out...seasonal would be 5 degrees. Kali

You are so right, Hannah. I couldn't agree more. It's what we do with what we have that counts. Even accomplishing one task is better than none, although it may not seem like it sometimes. It is easy to be negative and depressed and a challenge to stay positive, but it is oh so worth the effort. People enjoy being around you more and you feel better all over. A happy spirit lends itself to a stronger more healthy body. Thank you for the upbeat post. It is very refreshing.

Hi everybody ~

I'm new and am so happy I found this group!

I got chronic Lyme Disease in August of 2011, and am still recovering.

I think the best possible thing you can do when you are always sick is realize that you have a choice in how to respond. With Lyme, I had to drop out of school and work, and am pretty much spending my days on the couch. A good day is one where I can get 1 task done (like doing dishes or writing a blot post). It took me a long time to realize that, although the facts are bleak - what with being forced to give up so much of your life - you can still choose how you respond. I wrote a blog entry on this very thing a while back. http://www.waterwithlyme.blogspot.com/2012/02/choices-choices-choices.html

Hope that helps! Hope and healing to all of you.

What you said is so right on....nothing left to say.
It is about knowing our limits but still striving for as much a normal life as possible. Do not give up your dreams...there are ways around the normal ways to achieve them!

Do you do any criminal work? There is a lot of different things you can do with degree. I only know because that is what my husband was getting his degree in...he had one quarter to go. He instead went in the CHP here in California. He took the test with friend, he passed his friend did not. He just was in place where he was tired of college and ready for a decent job.
I always tried to get him to go back ...he should have been history professor...but he also writes very well. They frequently would have him go over other officer's reports because he would do such a great job on his...
he originally wanted to be criminal attorney...CHP changed that after going to court and seeing how it really is like.
I apologize because i tend to write very relaxed. Hope that is fine with all of you.

first of all welcome to this group!
i also am spiritual person who feels we really need to be respectful of all religions etc. I seen this either destroy groups or polarize it around one kind of religion...which than other drop out.
I think it is important to have some spiritual life. Just we must be careful how we express it. I do not get offended by quotes from like Bible, etc.
I just hope if someone expresses a discomfort than we try to respect them as well.
as you said..it is hot topic and we must all be respectful
Yes being sick chronically especially how it happen to you...one day you are fine than you are not...is very hard. I have lupus and fibro and more...but they started when i was young so i do not really know the difference. Yes i know i have become worse as i have aged but is it age or the disease? I think little of both.
Well i just wanted to welcome you and hope you get some support here. I know other groups and places if there is something specific you are looking for and be happy to help! take care, loree

Dear bbnrse,
Thanks for all the understanding and support. Every comment you made is profound, helpful and true. Are you sure you haven't been a psychologist during your life?

I am so busy trying to keep my head above water with the daily tasks of life that I am not finding the time to do everything you have said and suggested. You have given me a blueprint for what I need to do and if I had a printer...I would have tried to print in out so I could have a hard copy to refer to.

You are also a very good writer and thanks for complimenting me on my skills. Writing has always been something I have done well at and is always in the back of my mind. When I went to university my Mom wanted me to pursue a Journalism degree and felt I could combined my interest in criminology and perhaps one day have a career as a crime reporter. Instead I did a Masters in Criminology which I am very proud of but I've often thought how my mother knew me better than I knew myself at that age.

Thanks for offering off-site support...that shows me how caring, sensitive, supportive and devoted a person you are. Kali

Dear Kali,
You have really had a rough time, especially at such a young age. You've had to do a 180 degree turn from what you had in your youthful perceptions of life and what it could be. I truly feel for you. I'll not say feel sorry for you, because that does no good. I just feel badly that you have had to live your life the way you have. It is terribly hard. There is no easy way to meet the challenges of chronic illnesses. We have to make up our minds that life is what it is and wondering how 'it might have been' does no good. We face what we have to deal with with courage and determination. We make the very best we can of what we have. We find a career we can do within our limitations. It may not be our first choice, but it can be something we enjoy. We may even strike out in new territory and make a career no one else has done before. You are a very good writer. There might be something in that for you to do. But refocusing life is more than just a career or job. We have to try to stay balanced in all areas of our life. Our friendships, our health, physical and emotional, and our spiritual affiliations. Balance is everything. And we each must find our own. We have limitations, yes, but we have freedoms too. Freedom to choose which direction we take. Positive or negative. We must be honest with ourselves in what we are looking for and how we'll get there. Our focus changes with the times and circumstances we find ourselves in. We must look for the good things in life, wherever we can find them. If walking is possible, nature is a good place to find solace and inspiration. If not, I find music very comforting and inspirational. We just have to do what we can with what we have.
