Cholesterol lowering naturally Join this Group

I, too would like to get information on alternatives to statin drugs.

By January 17, 2012 - 11:17am

I have a liver disease and feel very uncomfortable taking a statin, despite the doctor saying it was safe as long as they did live function tests every six months. I had terrible muscle cramps in my legs when I first started, but after a few weeks it has subsided. Are there any specific foods that help reduce cholesterol naturally? or lifestyle changes that could be made, other than exercise. I also have myasthenia gravis and cannot exercise but very little. If there is anyone with any suggestions I'd appreciate them.

Hi bbnrse,

I love that you ask about lifestyle and diet changes, as I believe that they are the most important! Very wise of you! Some additional lifestyle and diet changes include:

Diet. Simply watching your cholesterol intake can help tremendously. You can do this by:

Eating a more plant-based diet. Animal products and animal by-products are high in cholesterol. By simply limiting your intake of animal products,  you can lower your cholesterol.

Eat more fiber. The best way is to get more fiber naturally, through fresh fruits and veggies.

Quit smoking. You may or may not smoke, but smoking has been shown to lower levels of good cholesterol. This one change can help with your health in so many ways.

Exercise. Exercising helps decrease fat and cholesterol.

Good luck on lowering that cholesterol, you can do it!

Thank you so much for all the great information. I will certainly look into it all. You have been very helpful and I appreciate the responses. From some recent information I came across statins are to be watched and studied before being used so freely.

Have you looked for any foods with plant sterols? Plant sterols are natural cholesterol reducers, and they're backed by an FDA health claim. Lots of foods and drinks are fortified with plant sterols, like Smart Balance HeartRight milk or MinuteMaid HeartWise orange juice.
