I was chosen to be a participant in the very first Stanford Healthy Lifestyle Program (SHLP) to be held at the Virginia Piper Cancer Center, Scottsdale, AZ.. First, class was Monday and will continue for 14 weeks. Dr. Phillips who conducts the class of 12 female Cancer Survivors told us right off-the-bat that exercise alone will not lead to weight loss; it takes eating properly, combined with exercise and stress management!
I am so glad to have the opportunity to learn how to change my life! I am 71 and want to be healthy. It has been 6 years since my Mastectomy; I have asthma, and last year I developed secondary Lymphedema ( which I can control with massage, medical grade essential oils, swimming and elastic garment). I chose not to have chemo or any treatment after my mastectomy, and it worked, this is why when I developed the lymphedema last year I was so shocked, but my husband has had dementia for many years, I lost my job and the stress was building. Then Sept. 2010, my husband fell breaking his wrist in several places requiring surgery, and this lead to him more confusion and the medical team said he needed more care than I was able to provide so he went into an adult foster home where he was not happy, and Feb. 2 he fell breaking his hip this too required surgery and compounded the dementia to alzeheimers and he has been placed in a long term nursing facility with Hospice care! So my stress level elevated to a new level. But good news, he is happy and I am now able to return to the workforce!
I need to learn the proper diet, exercise and mental programs to be able to live the rest of my life to the fullest! I know what to do, but now I will have the proper tools and a SUPPORT group of like-minded women!
I will report here weekly what I learn, so I can maybe help one of you!!!!
Thanks
Princeline

Good luck on the program and hopefully it will help with your stress level, or at least coping skills.
I have been in a breast cancer exercise study for 4 years, 2 years after the grant money ran out because we all strived as much from the exercise as we do from the friendships! I hope this happens to you too.

Thank you Princeline, you have already helped other women just by posting this information. Congratulations on getting into the program, and we look forward to your reports. It would also be helpful to know if there will be additional programs like this, both where you are in Scottsdale and in other parts of the country. I'm particularly interested since I was in a beta test for an online support program from Stanford for cancer survivors, and felt from the start that a live, in-person program would have more value. Good luck to you in the weeks ahead, and thanks again for thinking of others.
Take good care,
Pat
