i have horrible anxiety

By August 30, 2011 - 12:23am

Hi. I am a newbie here. I suffer from PTSD from my dad passing away in my arms. SInce then I have horrible anxiety attacks. I am trying to get off the medications they have me own so that I can utilize the biofeedback therapy that I use. I am scared to come off my medication having been on it for 6 years. Anyone have problems after long term use coming off them? Thanks for your insight.

Daisy, I agree with you about going off anti-anxiety or anti-depressant medication. It requires the support of a professional. If the cause of the depression and anxiety is still there, going off medication isn't all that likely to be successful unless you can also take advantage of some non-drug help to work through whatever comes up. For instance, counselling, nutrition, supplements, relaxation therapies, etc.

Hi turner4,

Welcome to EmpowHER. So sorry to hear this. Dealing with Anxiety attacks is not easy and can really affect your daily life.  If you stop abruptly, you may experience a number of unpleasant withdrawal symptoms such as crying spells, extreme restlessness, dizziness, fatigue, and aches and pains.

If you decide to stop taking antidepressants, it’s essential to consult a doctor and taper off slowly.

Here a few links that might be helpful.

Hi turner, I see no one has responded to your post, which is too bad. Your story is incredibly moving, and I hope you're doing well. I am a holistic doctor, and I just wanted to point out that the problems coming off anxiolytic medication is more of a withdrawal problem, not to mention the problem of just dealing with the possible increase in symptoms as you go off. There are natural therapies that can help, maybe you've already found some of them beyond the biofeedback.
Best of Health,
