What is a Doula and how can I find one?

By HERWriter Guide April 1, 2012 - 1:20pm

Thank you to Amazing Grace Doula for setting up such an important group.

Doulas are very welcome to talk about their services and let people know how they can be found. Those with questions are encouraged to ask Doulas for information.

We look forward to building this great Group!

I welcome the stories of other mommies and lets get a good discussion going. How did you feel going into the pregnancy then birth the homecoming with your new little one?

Hi again Susan! You hit the nail right on the head, as they say. That is the point of having a Postpartum Doula. We are often separated from family members, friends, etc. When we are new mommies and don't have a great support group around, Doulas stand in to help. We (I) have often linked moms to other new mom clubs, support groups and the like. I was fortunate to have family and friends around and that was key. So many questions, insecurities and such. Even if you hook up with another new mom that doesn't know much you can do the journey together..much less intimidating. The same is true in attending a birth. I am able to share, explain, encourage because of my nursing background, doula studies and being a mom. Not necessarily in that order. I know how much importance I place on sharing and the baby appreciates it to. Sorry you made the journey almost single handedly but you would be a good resource for other mommies so be encouraged. Please feel free to share again! Suz

Hi Susan!
Susan here also! Thanks for the question about Doulas!
Doulas have been around as long as women have been giving birth. In many parts of the world, we do the same things but are known by different names such as "woman helper", "one who waits with women". All basically the same thing, Doulas are birth supporters, postpartum care takers: we work essentially with women from prenatal to postpartum period. My certification is in postpartum care but my Birthdoula certification is on the way. I have supported 3 women during birth whereby I met with the mom (partner/family), helped them formulate a birth plan, answered pregnancy and birth questions, described what I have seen take place at hospital births. Then at the hospital, I coached breathing exercises, walked, repositioned, massaged, spoke with nurses and physicians for the family and then during the birth either coached with the mom or helped deliver or both. I did my postpartum work in much the same way, only helped the mom take care of the baby when they came home from hospital. If you check out other blogs or web pages or directory, you will see that Doulas function in much the same way, we support births and are there to be women helpers!!
