3 Adult Acne Solutions That Actually Work

By March 6, 2019 - 7:38am

When you’re a woman trying to establish your credibility in any setting, there are few things more embarrassing than adult acne. You know it’s what’s on the inside that counts, but when you look in the mirror and see several red dots on your nose and cheeks, it’s hard to stand with confidence—such is the case with nearly 50 percent of adult women.

In an attempt to solve the problem, it’s easy to overspend on skincare products. According to research collected by BodyLogic, about 20 percent of people who struggle with acne spend between $100 and $200 per month to try to cure their skin problems while 10 percent spend as much as $500 monthly.

Following a survey of more than 1,000 women, BodyLogic discovered that between $111 and $194 was spent monthly on skincare products that do not work. Millennial women spent the most on ill-fitted beauty products, and aggressive marketing approaches are said to be the driving force behind this misspent cash.

“It’s arguable that ‘perfect’ skin isn’t real (or even attainable), but that doesn’t stop some companies from charging hundreds of dollars for products with far-fetched claims and unrealistic expectations,” researchers said.

The constant marketing for skincare products makes it difficult to discern what works and what doesn’t. BodyLogic argues that it takes a more holistic approach to skincare if you truly want to rid your face of acne. There is not a single product that will save your skin from acne, but rather a combination of products and practices.

Every person’s skin is different, so what works for you may not work for others. However, as you search for the perfect acne solution, consider these ideas.

1. Over-the-Counter Cleansing Solutions

For most people, the first line of defense is an over-the-counter cleansing solution. There are thousands of options, each promising clear skin. All products are not created equal, however. Some are much better than others, and if you want success with these products, you must know what to look for. The best ingredients include:

• Salicylic acid
• Benzoyl peroxide
• Sulfur
• Glycolic acid
• Retinol

Each of these ingredients is very effective but isn’t enough on its own. According to Neal Schultz, M.D., exfoliation is also very important.

"Exfoliation is the most important thing you can do on a regular basis to be fighting acne both in terms of preventing it and treating it,” he says.

One of the top-rated products for treating acne that contains these ingredients and exfoliating beads is Proactiv. It comes in many different recipes fitted for a variety of skin types, including adult acne.

You may choose your own over-the-counter skin products as long as they contain these ingredients. It’s always helpful to have the guidance of a dermatologist who knows your skin and can recommend the best products.

2. Prescription Medications

Often, the best approach to challenging acne is to speak with your doctor. Mild acne can be treated with a low-dose prescription retinoid prescribed by a family physician. If your acne is moderate to severe, you’ll need the guidance of a dermatologist.

"It may well be worth a visit to a dermatologist,” California-based dermatologist Julie Anne Winfield told WebMD. “They often have samples they could give you to try. People can spend a fortune on over-the-counter medicines when there is maybe one single prescription drug that could solve the problem.”

She encourages the use of non-comedogenic lotions and skincare products and benzoyl peroxide products. “But it would be best to see a doctor to prevent possible acne scarring,” she says.

For the most severe acne, your dermatologist might suggest Accutane. This is an aggressive hormone treatment that is extremely effective at stopping acne for the rest of your life. However, it has a variety of negative side effects. There are other options to be discussed with your dermatologist if these side effects are too much.

3. Healthy Diet

Every dermatologist you speak with about your acne will stress the importance of a good diet. What you put inside your body has a significant influence on what occurs on the outside.

“Nutrient-rich whole foods like fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and healthy fats are good for your whole body, and that includes your skin,” dermatologist Rajani Katta, MD, FAAD told the American Academy of Dermatology Association, recommending that you speak with a board-certified dermatologist about a meal plan that’s best suited for your skin type.

He also recommends the use of supplements, as directed by a dermatologist, but he warns, “You can’t just pick a supplement up off the shelf and say, ‘This is going to work for me.’ In order for a supplement to be helpful, it needs to be the right supplement taken at the right dose for the right person.”

For best results in your acne treatment, consider a combination of options, guided by a dermatologist. Acne causes vary, so individual treatment is best.
