Each morning, as part of my daily routine, I spend a few minutes in my yoga practice doing sun salutation. It helps to get the cobwebs out of my brain and warms my muscles and centers me for the day. I love the practice of yoga! I have been practicing for over 11 years and at some point I didn’t think I needed to go to a class anymore, since I knew the positions so well I could make them up myself.

Last week I decided to try a class I found across the street from my new office. I actually signed up for 10 days of classes and by the end of the week I noticed something interesting. My class was so much more fulfilling than my individual daily practice. While it is true I do know all of the most common positions, the instructors know so much more about changing the combinations and how to make subtle changes in the positions that my body felt a better work out with their direction.

This experience reminded me how important it is to go to an expert to get advice on how to improve the quality of my exercise routine, meditation practice, health care, stress management, skills for work or home. When it comes to health, many people think that reading articles on the Internet can tell them all they need to know about how to take care of themselves.

One of the joys I have being a naturopathic doctor is to have people come into the office and explain in detail information about how there are so many factors beyond what they already know about their body and how it works. It allows me to empower them with full knowledge about how to get the health they want. It reminds me of my own situation where I know the poses but the instructors teach me how to put them all together to create a wonderfully fulfilling yoga practice!
