Fibromyalgia is not a well-understood condition. We don't know what causes it. We don't know how to fix it.

Well, here's something else you may not know about it. Fibromyalgia hits lots of children and adolescents.

The young person with a parent or other family member who has fibromyalgia or connective tissue disease, is a young person at risk. The young person who plays sports is at risk for fibromyalgia.

A child or adolescent with scoliosis, or curvature of the spine is a young person at risk. Even the young person who has bad posture and slumped shoulders may be at risk for fibromyalgia if other factors are also in place.

"I find that kids are more resilient and adaptable to change than adults. Their youth gives them a better chance at controlling the fibromyalgia and maintaining a stable baseline or remission. I remind the parents not to project their fears onto their child, because each child is unique and the fibromyalgia has a unique identity as well."
