Dr. Parish discusses the sexual dysfunction symptoms women can experience.

Dr. Parish:
Well, it may be a change in any phase of the sexual response cycle, low desire, arousal or orgasm. In women it tends to be multidimensional, so women don’t just tend to have one problem. They may also have sexual pain and that maybe leading to a low desire or decrease in arousal. Sexual pain is yet another aspect of this. And so the symptoms are a complaint about one of these aspects of the sexual response.

Also the important thing in women is that there’s a lot of emphasis in criterion on personal distress and whether the patient in fact is concerned, distressed or interested in seeking therapy. It seems that only about half of individuals with sexual problems actually want to have them addressed and seek treatment. So we have to be careful to say that prevalence rates are the same as those who actually want treatment.
